So far, in my admitted limited tests, when I use a word in the shine, then alter the first letter to be upper or lower case with no ther changes, the two monsters created have the same sub-breed. Example: Fire = Rock Zuum fire = Zaza
The one exception seems to be that if a pure-breed is made, then both will be pures, rather than the sub being the same. Example: Ice = Pure Zuum ice = Pure Golem
And, if you simply change the first letter on a word as few as 3 letters, you can get the same sub. Here's a list of some working tricks. "-" is for a blank where you can place whatever letter you like.
-ord = Joker sub -or = Durahan sub -ar = all the pure types

I've also noticed that not only are subs the same, but characteristics are the same or similar and stats also have a pattern.
For example, using Celebre gives a Sodacchi (Mocchi/Psiroller) with Soft Body (damage reducer), Earth Know and Grace Step; stats 85,111,138,138,126,116.
In lowercase, celebre makes a Sabani (Arrowhead/Psiroller) with Hard Shell (damage reducer), Earth Know and Grace Step; stats are 105,106,93,93,166,86.
The really weird part is each monster's Spd and Acc are tied.
