MR1 Tenth Anniversary Challenge!

Monster Rancher Metropolis: The Coliseum (Public Monster Rancher Tournaments): The Locker Room (Q&A): MR1 Tenth Anniversary Challenge!
By Lisa Shock on Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 06:49 pm:

So, here's an official thread for discussing the event. Please note that I put up an announcement, if anyone has suggestions for changes to the announcement, please let me know!

I am allowing up to 3 entries per person, so have fun!

By hengers rock on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 - 02:04 pm:

I'm on it, got 2 monsters lined up already

By MrGG on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 10:43 am:

Argh, I would love to do this, but I got college things coming up. I could probably find some time, and might be able to get my step brother in it. No promises.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 01:56 pm:

That's cool. I'd love to compete against you!

By Swezlon Uno on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 03:47 pm:

Lisa, would we be able to give our monsters sharked items?

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 07:24 pm:

I would have to say no to that, since it would make the whole peach issue very difficult - a monster can only find peaches on one trip during its lifetime.

By Swezlon Uno on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 03:37 pm:

Gotcha, I'll just get them the old fashion then, besides it wouldn't be as fun if I cheated(or if I magically happen to win, I wouldn't be as proud of myself). Just asking, though. But you did say sharked cash is ok, right? Because I did that a long time ago, and I really don't want to restart my file.

By ViolentDre on Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 11:54 pm:

I don't have a shark, so I had to raise money the old school way. I've now got plenty of bankroll and will soon be working on my second gen posse. Lisa, do you think my crew are each going to need 5000 plus combined stats (that's a lot to me) in order to be competetive? The strongest one I've ever raised back in the day had about 3800 combined, I think. I'm new to the tournament realm so I have no fantasies 'bout winning it all. Are any of the experienced tourney participants willing to holler some advice to me for raising tournament monsters? Thanks, people.

By Lisa Shock on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 04:11 pm:

I would venture to say that most entrants will have all 999s, so be prepared...

By Varthlokkur on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 03:52 am:

I am not sure I can raise a monster worthy of competing. I haven't played that game in years. I just restarted an MR2 game. We'll have to see.

What is the deadline?

By Varthlokkur on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 03:56 am:

DoH! Found it, I think. November is the deadline. I'll see what I can do. 8^)

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 12:08 pm:

Yeah, you've got a few months! The cool thing about going back and playing MR1 is how easy it is compared to MR2.

By hengers rock on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 12:56 pm:

I am shamelessly bumping this for people who only check last day. we need people for this tourny.

By Blackish_ on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 01:29 pm:

Lol, I'm one of those people. I'd love to enter, but sadly, I don't have MR1 :(. Only MR2, MR3, MR4, and MRA2.

Good luck getting people.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 03:40 pm:

You have until November to find a copy....

By Blackish_ on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 05:46 pm:

Hmm, well that's a pretty forgiving deadline.

Time will tell, as will finding a copy.

By mepersoner on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 07:59 pm:

I'm already training for this.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 08:21 pm:

I am still in the planning stages.

By mepersoner on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 11:21 am:

Well... I had to start a new game. All I have right now is some money makers.

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 08:46 pm:

For anyone who hasn't played the game, your experience will give good evidence that making a tourney monster from scratch is a reasonable project in the time given.

Post updates, if you can!

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 06:53 pm:

My experimental monster is now 1y 4mo old!

By Blackish_ on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 06:57 pm:

Just thinking... Have you ever recorded vids of all the fights in the tourney and uploaded them on you tube? Would be alot of work, but definately awesome.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 09:18 pm:

Youtube didn't exist when we had tourneys. Also, it IS a lot of work. Each round of an event is best 3/5 battles, meaning that each square on a bracket can take 5-6 battles to decide (6th is a tie-breaker in rare cases). On the standard 4x4 grid you wind up with up to 72 individual battles comprising an event.

By Blackish_ on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 09:28 pm:

Yeah, way too much work. Just thinking...

Maybe recording a match deciding which monster wins the whole tourney. Again, just thinking...

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 09:46 pm:

You often don't know when that is happening. We usually run all of one monster's events, then move on to the next two, following the grid. Many times the first monster out wins all 3 of it's rounds before the others have finished, and it isn't til you're done that you know that monster #1 took the event.

Occasionally there will be a final tiebreaker, but, that's rare. The tie-breakers are usually a set of 5 matches of each of the tied monsters against a known standard monster like Bones, not each other. So, they are 10 rounds.

By mepersoner on Monday, April 30, 2007 - 04:48 am:

Something more like this would be more possible with an elimination or double elimination tournament. Just the last match could be done.

By Lisa Shock on Monday, April 30, 2007 - 09:53 am:

True, however, many people don't view eliminations as really fair. Plus, since you never get to face everyone's monster, people don't get as involved in rivalries.

Doesn't everyone want the opportunity to hand, oh say, meep, his monster's tushie on a platter?

By mepersoner on Monday, April 30, 2007 - 03:05 pm:

Lisa you've made the mistake of thinking such a possibility exists.

By Blackish_ on Monday, April 30, 2007 - 05:46 pm:

Lol, maybe someday. It's all up to the tourney host.

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 07:46 pm:

There was a guy who tried it, his event never really got off the ground because no one wanted to enter. People really like the idea of having their monster battle everyone else's.

BTW, we need to decide on an official tie-breaker monster. Is Science ok?

By John Hawley on Thursday, May 3, 2007 - 04:02 pm:

She blinded me with Science!

You knew somebody was going to do it...

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, May 13, 2007 - 05:55 pm:

I have just gotten a slot request for the first three slots, from a new member.

By R. Jensen on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

I am that member. Hello. My three monsters were ready from the start.

Anyways, is the tournament format in the grid pattern, as seen in actual MR1 battles? If not, how will monsters be matched up with their opponents?

(Sorry if it is already stated in the outline)

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, May 17, 2007 - 10:12 am:

Yes, we will do a grid, that way everyone gets to battle everyone else. It may wind up being huge and taking a couple of nights, but it's not a big deal.

By Anonymous on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 10:02 am:

Will memory cards be mailed back after the contestant is eliminated or will all mailed cards be sent back at the same time?

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 09:53 pm:

I'll probably mail them back all at once. Judging from prior events, this should be done in 2-3 days.

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, May 27, 2007 - 02:15 pm:

My monster has entered prime....

By Anonymous on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 04:51 pm:

Can't wait to see or battle against it. What type?

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, June 2, 2007 - 09:57 pm:

Sorry, but choice of breed is all part of the strategy involved. It will be unveiled after all entrants have been submitted.

By Anonymous on Sunday, June 3, 2007 - 05:48 pm:

Darn.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 - 08:22 pm:

My monster is progressing nicely..

By Lisa Shock on Friday, July 20, 2007 - 09:20 am:

How is everyone doing with this???

By Subster on Friday, July 20, 2007 - 06:19 pm:

raising a doodle atm :/

By hengers rock on Saturday, July 28, 2007 - 10:59 pm:

I had to stop for a bit, hopefully will be back on track soon.

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, July 29, 2007 - 10:18 am:

Yay! There's about 4 months left everyone! Still enough time to get started!

By Convoy Avenger on Sunday, July 29, 2007 - 04:26 pm:

I would love to join, but I never had a chance to play MR1, nor do I own a copy, so I can't imagine I'd be much of a challange hah.

By Infernus on Thursday, September 27, 2007 - 02:43 pm:

Any updates from anyone?

I don't have an entry, and likely won't (I've mentioned why to Lisa - not sure if you remember what it was), but I'm still very interested in this event.

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, September 27, 2007 - 09:16 pm:

I am mid-way in my entry. I am currently cursing my 65+ hour a week schedule at work. I've also detoured with MF:DS and MF:O. I should be able to put in some good hours this sunday, though.

By Capt. Brainpan on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 06:32 pm:

I think it's worth considering webcasting or just putting one or two important matches on YouTube if at all possible -- I'd love to actually be able to truly see the handiwork of some of this community's best monsters.

And no, I can't raise anything for it--- my skills are nonexistant in MR2 and 1. I'm decent at t'others though.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 - 12:37 pm:

I can try to post something, it's dificult, because an important or deciding match might actually be fought very early on. Saving all of the rounds is a huge project.

People who haven't competed may not realize that the in-game events are usually set up so that the tougher opponents show up near the end of an event. There's no way to know what might happen in a RL event.

By Lisa Shock on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 02:23 pm:

An entry has been sumbitted via snail-mail, thus making the total entries besides mine 2 so far. I'll have an event date soon.

I know I can do it Thanksgiving night, would that be ok?

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 09:43 am:

The anniversary date is the 24th, but I have to work that day -all day for 12+ hours. I can do it on a Sunday evening or Thanksgiving day/evening (11/22). Opinions?

By GoldenBoy on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 11:35 pm:

I have no opinion, I just wanted to say I can remember sitting in Thorr's living room going through both his and mine entire CD collections over the course of a couple days.

I also remember going out shopping at one point after we had found a list of CDs that made rares on one of the oooooold message boards.

That began my stinking quest for the exact version of Beck Mellow Gold. 5 distinct discs and I never got the right one. :)

By Thorr on Thursday, November 8, 2007 - 05:58 am:

I remember it well. I bought my playstation just to play MR. I bought them because I had busted my neck (for the second time) and couldn't do much else.

But we digress from the purpose of this discussion...

By Thorr on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 07:48 am:

Ok, I believe I am ready to submit my monster. Can I email the DexDrive save game to you????

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 12:40 pm:

Yes, send it to the gmail address -if you don't know it, it's the address shown in the how to get an account area of the Office of the Mayor. (other mail services think the attachment is a virus...)

So, Thursday night? or Sunday night?

By Thorr on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 12:56 pm:

I can wait until Sunday if it's easier for you.

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 08:40 pm:

Doesn't matter to me, I just haven't heard from the other two entrants...

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 09:09 am:

I'll make it Sunday so people have time to plan.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, November 24, 2007 - 10:47 am:

Tomorrow night everyone!!!

By Thorr on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 07:05 am:

Yay!

I'll be away while it's going on, but will see the results in the morning.

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 12:00 pm:

I will post a transcript.

By Thorr on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 04:43 pm:

My plans fell through, so I will be monitoring the board...

By Thorr on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 04:45 pm:

and possibly hanging out in the tourney chat room..

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 06:07 pm:

Thorr's Angle, named Diana, swept the event winning every round by KO!

By Thorr on Monday, November 26, 2007 - 04:47 am:

Yahoo!!!

By Thorr on Monday, November 26, 2007 - 01:44 pm:

I realize there was a shortage of entrants, but it still tickles me that the very first monster I raised in any MR game -ever- is the winner of the anniversary tourney.

Luckily there isn't an anti-doping policy because she would never pass the test. Her stats when I started getting her ready for the tourney were all around 300 with a SKill of 500 and an INT of 800. It took a LOT of pills to get her stats up to the high 900's. :P

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 08:14 am:

I'd like to thank every one for entering!

By Ladydarkwolf on Friday, April 24, 2009 - 05:51 pm:

i'm working on on an ideal team in my head... lets see if i'll get them up and ready by the tourney deadline =P

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, April 25, 2009 - 11:14 am:

This event is in the past. It took place in November 2007.
