i also don't remember the techs well enough to know if anyone has a tech damage advantage sufficient to overcome the guts regen advantage documented by lisa above.
i do know that plants hit a little harder in mr1 than they do in the other games. but kuros and nyas, i seem to remember, have some very strong attacks. so this is my guesstimate of the odds:

for those who want the cliff notes, here you go:
[1] maxx monster tourneys tend to be longer because of fewer ko's. in mr1, it was rare for any monster to end up in the yellow. there were more techs thrown, but more misses as well.
[2] more importantly, damage was way down. the biggest hit was, if i recall correctly, 189. strings of damage in the 30-40 range were more common.
[3] the two monsters who finished tied for last with 1-2 records, chaos the kuro and striker the balon, used mostly weak techs. the balon at least had stab that was used once or twice; the kuro may have had decent techs in there somewhere, but all it ever did was punch and throw tantrums. apparently in mr1, the computer AI does not dig deep into a column very often. instead it mostly skims the surface, and takes the top tech.
[4] of the two monsters who finished tied for first with 2-1 records, teddy ruxpin had the most consistently strong techs - comparatively speaking of course. his punches and kicks consistently hit in the 70-80 range. science had the usual array of 30ish techs, like jab and slap, but it also had face drill which hit for about 110 or so when it hit.
[5] teddy won the first battle with science [by one percentage point in the ethical 5th match] because science didn't use face drill enough. in the tiebreaker rematch, science fell behind 0-1 then used face drill often enough to sweep the next 3.
