This is similar to Poor Richard's
Almanack, which you may remember from your history lessons as being famous for this. Read on.

Win your first match, and the tourney's OK,
But lose this first match, in this grade you're to stay.

Treating your monster will make him too fat,
Put him on a diet and he'll look more flat.

A bad natured monster is sneaky and snide,
While a nicer monster in his work takes pride.

A harsh raising style will grant fast ascention,
while a gent'ler one to long life draws attention.

'Tis all I could think of for one installment, but there maybe more coming.

The syllable count confuzd me. It seems very off beat. Oh well, good try.

For which rhyme? every time there's a double line, it starts a new one.

I didnt have trouble with the rhythm
maybe your reading it wrong...

In the first one, put the second line emphasis on 'grade', and in the second one, use 'him'.
