September Will Be MR2s Tenth Anniversary; Tourney Anyone?

Monster Rancher Metropolis: The Cafe: Archived Topics From Prior Years: Year 2009 Topics (Year of the Laboratory): September Will Be MR2s Tenth Anniversary; Tourney Anyone?
By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 09:56 pm:

Just thought I'd put feelers out for interest in an MR2 tourney. I'd like to see all new monsters, no re-hashing past rivalries. (although we could do an exhibition match with the champion and an old champion)

I know it's early, but, good ranching takes time and planning. So, anyone interested?

By GM on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 10:30 pm:

I'm up for it. I've got a Cinder Bird in the freezer I've been wanting to try out.

By Subster on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 09:46 am:

I'm playing through MR2 for the 14th time again right now, how do we go abouts this tourny? mail a memory card with our file on it?

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 10:46 am:

You can mail a memory card, or get a dex drive and email a save. (if buying online, make certain to get the PSX dex, not the N64 one) The basic rules are that the only gameshark use allowed is to get cash and to take glue out of inventory.

By Zercker on Thursday, April 9, 2009 - 05:19 am:

Man that stinks cause my game disc wont let me go on expeditions so i cant unlock any monsters
)=

By Lisa Shock on Friday, April 10, 2009 - 01:35 pm:

Try having the disc re-surfaced. Most Game Crazy stores (Hollywood Video) will do it for like $2.

BTW, This should probably be a no-metalner event.

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, April 12, 2009 - 03:59 pm:

In addition to no metalners, the usual rules are:

no emulator play
no sharking except for cash and glue removal
no sharked parents
entrants will be assigned save slots, and expected to have their monster in the freezer

I am debating allowing capsule monsters and their offspring. Any objections?

By GM on Sunday, April 12, 2009 - 07:20 pm:

I wouldn't mind seeing GentleMocchi strut its stuff.

By Sam Stuttard on Monday, April 13, 2009 - 06:13 am:

Can you use PAL version saves?

By Lisa Shock on Monday, April 13, 2009 - 08:04 am:

Nope, sorry. The North American PSX won't read the save.

By Velo on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 08:31 pm:

i no longer have a working playstation, but I would be able to recap it for the sake of old times. if fenrick still had jabba I'd enter him, haha

anyway, email me at:

epaul4@utmem.edu

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - 09:59 am:

Wow, ok. Remember that you can play on a PS2, too.

By Cear on Thursday, April 16, 2009 - 06:17 am:

Why no metalners? I mean, I've never trained one so I don't know why they would be banned.

By GM on Thursday, April 16, 2009 - 08:34 am:

That's because they have an extremely high Guts regen rate and can launch attacks much more rapidly than other monsters. It would give them an unfair advantage.

By Ladydarkwolf on Thursday, April 16, 2009 - 06:26 pm:

i like to try out of the tourney, but i don't want to send my only PSX Memory Card where can i find a dex drive at a decent price.

By Lisa Shock on Friday, April 17, 2009 - 09:51 am:

I'd suggest getting more memory cards. There's a limit to the number of times you can overwrite saves on a card, so they all wear out eventually. The 3rd party cards are as good as the Sony brand IF you buy the standard 15-block type. Avoid the mega-cards, they break really quickly. HERE's a deal on a 3-pack of new cards. Scroll down, one seller has it for $6.49 plus $3.99 shipping. But, other ones are ok, too, just look for new MIP cards.

Several sellers have new ones on eBay for about $15, which is still a smoking deal - the Dex was $49.99 when it was new.

Remember that the Dex works only with Windows, and requires an open serial port -something many new comps do not have.

By Shen the Keeper on Saturday, April 18, 2009 - 05:45 pm:

Capsule is a food, right?

I forget.

If it is the food I'm thinking of, if its allowed I can enter a monster I made long ago.

She's probably not the best for tourney place (Pixie/Tiger with high stats but low str) but it'd be neat to enter her.. if for no other reason then to celebrate my favorite game ever.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, April 18, 2009 - 07:18 pm:

Capsules are a combining item that were disabled in the US version. You have to use a gameshark to make them. They allow you to make monsters like GentleMocchi and a version of Moo slightly different from the CD one.

Be forewarned that pretty much all entries will be all 999s monsters...

By Zercker on Monday, April 20, 2009 - 05:36 am:

Question can i put a ps1 memory card into my ps2 or ps3 and save onto it?

By Lisa Shock on Monday, April 20, 2009 - 09:58 am:

Yes. You cannot save PS1 saves on a PS2 memory card. Well, you can kind of store them there, but PS1 games cannot access them on a PS2 card.

By Zercker on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 - 03:16 pm:

ahh ic thank you

By Shen the Keeper on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 - 03:40 pm:

You don't mean every single stat 999 do you? o.O I was able to get a few stats that high but not all.

By OgreBattle on Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 04:06 am:

Bollocks, I wanted to compete but I'm having trouble finding a psx memory card around my local area.

I ACTUALLY still have my game disc. Probably need to get all my MR discs resurfaced....

By Zercker on Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 05:16 am:

Does Gamestop or EB Games resurface? because thats the only game store in my area. Well they are 45 mins away.

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 10:17 am:

Yes, all stats at 999. It's possible, and easily achievable by using a combined monster and/or a raising method. I got a Mocchie from the market to all 999s at 5years and 6 months of age.

A few GameStops resurface. Call them and ask. If you have an indie record store nearby, they may do it as well. Some Hollywood Videos will also do it. you may have to find a friend with a Game Doctor.

There are used copies of the game at The Used Game Trading Zone.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, May 9, 2009 - 04:34 pm:

Just a reminder that I am currently crafting a terrifyingly awesome monster for this event...

By big jay on Sunday, May 10, 2009 - 06:22 am:

this is interesting... i might just join

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, May 24, 2009 - 08:46 pm:

I am waiting for mepersoner to submit something...

By Infernus on Monday, May 25, 2009 - 06:33 pm:

Lisa, do you still have Kinetix? I'm referring to my pure Henger with everything but INT maxxed out. I'm not sure if you would consider it a rehash - I raised him for LC's S class well over three years ago, and he has yet to see his fight (which is, in all truth, supposed to be with Fruitt).

Aside from that, I guess I'll ask about Metalner subs. Does the Metalner ban include them?

By Lisa Shock on Monday, May 25, 2009 - 08:25 pm:

Metalner subs are ok.

Let me look, I'll post an answer in a couple of hours.

By Lisa Shock on Monday, May 25, 2009 - 08:32 pm:

Looks like I have three of your S class saves, two of which may have the monster on them. I will email all 3.

P.S. send me your mailing addy, I got you some socks, and assorted other trinkets, in Japan.

P.P.S. -Everyone else who got socks should know that those are MEN'S socks, except for the flowery pair that I sent to Mrs. fifa.

By mepersoner on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 10:07 am:

Holy baloney. I got distracted by MR2 for the MR1 tournament and wasn't ready for that one in time. I just recently got a PS3 and bought like 7 games for it... so I guess that'll have to be put on the wayside until I get a monster ready for this.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 02:32 pm:

Ah yes, some real competition...

By mepersoner on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 - 02:07 pm:

I think I'm going to have to pull the PS1 out of storage. I have a PS3 and my girlfriend's PS2 is perpetually in use by her dad. Ah...

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 - 08:03 pm:

I believe the PS3 works, there's a device you can buy to read memory data back and forth. You may need to upgrade your firmware to allow it to load back onto a memory card.

By GM on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 10:02 am:

This is true.

Here it is.

It can transfer both PS1 and PS2 game saves to and from the PS3 to a PS1 or PS2 memory card.

By mepersoner on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 01:20 pm:

I stuck in MR2 (which is *not* in storage) and it worked no problem. I may go grab an adapter just so I can start in my game, but I could just start a new game and save on the PS3. Question then would be if I could somehow send the data to Lisa... I'll get it done one way or another.

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 02:02 pm:

I don't have a PS3, so my info is second-hand. You might have to get the adapter to get the save to me. Unless you guys can send saves from one PS3 to another, and have that person use a dex drive or mail me the card....

By mepersoner on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 07:12 pm:

After a little looking around it appears I will have to buy that device... and find my memory cards.

By MrGG on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 09:18 pm:

Oh man, I'd love to get into this. I miss this game so much I may have to dig up everything....

By Elf* on Friday, June 12, 2009 - 08:49 am:

You can use a USB memory stick to send PS3 save
files to another one, though I would recommend
backing up any
files on that PS3 onto a seperate memory stick,
as two game files from seperate consoles in my
experience have
overwritten the original.

By Lisa Shock on Friday, June 12, 2009 - 12:42 pm:

GG, we'd love to see you enter...

By GM on Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 10:52 am:

Here's a thought; since you have a video card, Lisa, how about we have this tourney streamed live via Ustream?

Ustream

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 04:07 pm:

Maybe...It's not a video card it's a USB connector thing from China that I got on ebay. I can make a video or two for you tube, then my computer locks up and has to be re-started...

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, June 14, 2009 - 12:06 pm:

I'm just worried about the event being interrupted a lot by my computer failing.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, July 18, 2009 - 09:40 pm:

I've been a bit lazy lately, need to get back into the groove of raising my monster...

By Infernus on Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 06:00 pm:

I've been a bit lazy lately, not raising a monster. I have picked something, though (it took me about 3 weeks to pick). I'm not sure what I can do in a month and a half, but I'll try my best. Incidentally, why is the tourney scheduled for September when the anniversary is in November?

Also, do you ever go on chat anymore?
P.S. I'll get back to you on that e-mail pretty quick. It keeps slipping my mind.

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 09:00 pm:

November was the anniversary for MR1. MR2 was released on September 4. I was working as a manager of a game store and remember it well.

By Infernus on Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 09:47 pm:

Oh. The title of this topic is rather misleading, then. :3

By Lisa Shock on Monday, July 20, 2009 - 11:25 am:

OOps...

By mepersoner on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 02:00 pm:

I've trained about 4 monsters to unlock stuff and get back into the groove of things. Nothing tourney worthy yet though. (I still don't have jokers...)

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 04:59 pm:

Yeah, at this point I don't really know if I am raising the tourney monster, or a parent for it...

By mepersoner on Thursday, July 23, 2009 - 06:39 pm:

Well, I think any of us can make a monster a tourney monster no matter what type it is... depending on how much work we want to put into it. (DP method... or the two week version, or SI method, etc.)

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, July 23, 2009 - 07:02 pm:

Well, true. I did, after all, spend about 16 hours just trying to get a tab lover to start with. I dunno if I could handle several days of combining for a tab loving baby.

By mepersoner on Thursday, July 23, 2009 - 07:16 pm:

16 hours huh? I'm lucky I haven't started actually training the monster I'm going to train yet, so I haven't had to endure that nonsense yet...

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, August 2, 2009 - 09:05 pm:

A little over a month away! Time to get serious!!

By mepersoner on Sunday, August 2, 2009 - 10:55 pm:

I should probably start looking into that transfer cable to put saves from a PS3 onto a PS1 memory card.

By Lisa Shock on Monday, August 3, 2009 - 12:50 pm:

If you need help finding one, let me know.

By Lisa Shock on Monday, August 17, 2009 - 10:32 am:

Just a reminder to everyone to seriously get into gear with the ranching!

Also, if anyone who is really raising a monster has problems with the date of the event, please post something. I am willing to move it, if we have serious entrants who need an extra few days or something.

By mepersoner on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 09:44 am:

Uh, I will tell you in a week. Have some monsters done, but not ones I want to enter (lvl ~108'ish).

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 01:55 pm:

Yeah, I could use some extra time. Another RL project has come up.

By TracedInAir on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 - 03:51 pm:

How can I compete in this tournament? I'm no stranger to the game but I've been lurking the forums for like ten years, and only after I recently got back into the game was I able to figure out how to max out a monster's stats. I've heard of the Dexdrive but I have a) a Ps2 with a ps1 memory card and b) Windows XP, when the dexdrive seemingly only works with windows ME and lower. What do I do? I've heard about the Dexdrive working for some people with windows XP and that I just need certain drivers etc, is this true? Is there a better way for me to play online? Thanks.

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 - 09:15 pm:

Try downloading the Dexter software, and see if you see the program set up and working. You can get it from the Dex Drive wikipedia page. You will need a serial port on your computer, because the ex plugs in to that.

Other than a Dex, you can mail a save on a memory card to me. You will need a slot assignment, with a save file on that assigned slot and the monster in the Freezer. Email me for information on getting a slot. I will mail the memory card back to you.

By Lisa Shock on Friday, August 28, 2009 - 10:24 pm:

Ok, I am going to delay this by a month. I have a broken finger and a broken hand-bone, so there's no way I can host. And, my monster isn't done yet. (ASCII Grip to the rescue once again!)

By GM on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 05:11 am:

Sounds good. Hopefully I'll be able to get my dex drive working with my new netbook by then.

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 09:06 am:

I managed to find a serial to usb connector, haven't tried it yet. But, I still own old computers.

By TracedInAir on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 02:31 pm:

This is very good news for me - my dexdrive probably won't come in for another 2 weeks or so. And I did kind of want to train something better than a Mocchi/Tiger (those "well-balanced" monsters are so easy to max out!) Thanks Lisa for breaking your finger.

By Infernus on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 03:10 pm:

I was figuring to be done my monster within the week, but I honestly don't know how it'll turn out. Now I have a chance to aim for two (or one, if this thing doesn't work). Good news indeed.

Also, I still haven't tested my Dex Drive. It worked last time with this set up, so it should still work buuuut...I better get on that.

P.S.
Lisa, did you get my e-mail response?

By Lisa Shock on Sunday, August 30, 2009 - 10:09 am:

Sorry, I didn't see an email. Must have been caught in a spam filter, sorry.

By Infernus on Monday, August 31, 2009 - 05:48 pm:

That's not your fault by any means, so no worries. I'll re-send tomorrow (likely from a different e-mail addy).

By mepersoner on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 10:37 am:

Oh good... my computer took a dump and I'm now using a public computer at the library.

What happened to your hand Lisa? I sprained my finger too... going for a takedown in wrestling.

By Ido on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 11:58 am:

Oh gosh I wish my game wasn't locked on B class :( I guess I can still level up a monster high enough..but I don't think I'll be able to compete, not that I have any DexDrive either, though maybe that'll give me time to emulate the game on my PC and get a new game going ^_^

By TracedInAir on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 06:36 pm:

Playing on an emulator would probably be faster in the long run, given saved states and the fact that you can fast forward the game's running speed (maybe not on Ps1 emulators, I haven't tried one).

By Infernus on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 08:44 pm:

First, class has limited impact in these tournaments. That you can reach B is perfect, since you can get Special techs there if you want to. If you don't, then an E class monster with maxxed stats is the same as if it were S class.

Second, my file with my tournament monster just got corrupted. It's a setback (especially given how well things were going), but I'll start up again tomorrow. I've got backups, but they're "years" of training behind. I'll be more cautious this time. Kind of a bummer, though.

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 - 11:03 am:

Just a reminder that emulator saves are not allowed in the tourney.

By Ido on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 - 05:40 pm:

No no I meant stuck as I can't get any newer monsters, thought it would also affect my ability to get max stats. Well since I'll try this on my PC anyways it's of no matter now :P

By Ido on Thursday, September 3, 2009 - 03:04 pm:

Wait so that mean that I can't play it on the PC at all, right?? Blasted me for not reading the previous post. Sorry :(

By Lisa Shock on Thursday, September 3, 2009 - 04:51 pm:

No PC play at all, period.

By Ido on Thursday, September 3, 2009 - 08:07 pm:

Oh well fine, the only two reasons I wanted that was because that I don't own the game anymore and don't think using the DexDrive for anything else. Anyways I wish you all fun~

By Lisa Shock on Friday, September 25, 2009 - 11:01 am:

Save slots one & two have been reserved!

By Shen the Keeper on Friday, October 2, 2009 - 08:59 pm:

Looks like I fail.

I've been spending weeks trying to get a good second generation monster, but I guess I misunderstand combining.

I raised maybe 5 monsters and none of them would be good combinations. My latest two were the exact same monster (the one I wanted in the end) and they even have the same ranks in stats but they are 'all up to' me. So still no maxed monster for me.

I guess I'll keep at it, but I likely won't make the tourney, which is disappointing since I wanted to show my support for my favorite game of all time.

By mepersoner on Friday, October 2, 2009 - 11:00 pm:

Monsters of the same type will NEVER be a great combination.

Might try combining them and seeing how it turns out anyways.

By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 - 07:12 pm:

I'm swamped. Work + jury duty. I am going to move the event date to first week of November. Right now, two slots are spoken for.

If anyone has opinions on the date, please post your concerns.

By TracedInAir on Friday, October 9, 2009 - 06:27 pm:

Not on a Thursday, please.

Also, how come there was so much interest and now so few people have registered?

By Lisa Shock on Saturday, October 10, 2009 - 09:47 am:

That always happens.
