You need to press select and go to the option that says items. Selecting an item actually equips it so when you do battle you use the item. if you lose all three counters your items are taken ( all of them) you can use fly boots( you don't lose counters or items until they break) or luxe bagde( gives 2 extra counters)or rich badge ( gives 1 extra counter)
