The Guide has a list of requirements for getting opening up more character input boxes in your shrine.

3 Boxes - Available when you gain permission
4 Boxes - You must unlock Joker, Dragon, Phoenix, Centaur, or Naga (any one of them)
5 Boxes - You must unlock Xenon OR Gali
6 Boxes - You must unlock Xenon AND Gali

I have to translate the info for 3 boxes. The chart gives you the condition for getting the character regen method, but I haven't attempted to read that yet.
